About Us

Kahler Cycling Academy specializes in cycling development & training clinics. Our popular Training Clinics have been running since 1983, and are a fun and fast way to develop your fitness - whether for cycling or any other activity. These exciting and fast paced classes challenge you, both mentally and physically, to improve your physical conditioning and mental toughness. Everyone with the desire can improve dramatically in as little as one 8 week session. Depending on your starting point, it is highly possible for you to make a 25 percent improvement in your aerobic function while losing a few pounds (and percentage points) of fat in the process. All this in a safe, structured, and well guided high energy environment.

The CYCLING CLINICS were developed in 1983 by Robert Kahler, upon his return from a National Team coaching appointment at the U.S. Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs. With a Master’s Degree in Exercise Physiology and 35 years of cycling experience, Robert put together the Nation’s most comprehensive and successful indoor cycling training program.

Robert Kahler

COACH

Robert has a Masters of Science Degree in Exercise Physiology and has been cycling for over 40 years, including being California State Road Champion in 1985. Robert has been a National Cycling Coach since 1983 and was appointed as National Team Coach for 6 Years at the Colorado Springs Olympic Training Center.

The first Monark stationary bike class was born at the Belmont Athletic Club in 1982. A year later the classes outgrew the Athletic Club and moved to Robert's new bike shop, Long Beach Cycle Sports (LBCS) in Belmont Shore. Known originally as the Cycling Development and Training Clinics, the classes were promptly renamed by the participants as the Torture Clinics. In 1987, Robert opened Santiago Cycling and moved the Torture Clinic series to Tustin. Finally, in 2011, the current dedicated class space was opened as Kahler Cycling Academy. Since conception, 2 clinics have expanded to 6 and seen thousands of riders surpass their goals.

Michael has always had a passion for the bike and has been riding competitively for over 28 years. In the early 2000’s, Michael won a handful of local races and took overall mountain bike wins in the Amateur Cup Series, Rim Nordic Series and the California State Championship Series. In 2014, he participated in his first mountain bike marathon event, The Mongolia Bike Challenge, a 7 day stage race over the steppes of Mongolia's rugged landscape. Today Michael prefers to participate in the occasional one day race or century ride whether it be on the road or in the dirt. Michael is an Architect by trade but a cyclist and coach by passion. He is licensed through the United States Cycling Federation (USCF) and runs Pedalhound Coaching where this lifelong passion for cycling now helps others achieve their cycling and fitness goals.

Michael Morrell

COACH

“Nobody would do alone what they do in my class...because of the peer pressure of the dozens of the other riders around you and the instruction...Indoor training can get you to a fitness level in at least half the time as training outside. Indoors, there’s no downhill coasting, no stop signs and no drafting. Indoors, you always replicate a little hill or long climb, and there’s no stopping.”
                              -Robert Kahler
